3rd Section Baritone |
1968 |
Hello.
I had just moved to New York in February 1968 from Tennessee when I read an article in
the Drum Corps World about the Sunrisers. I had originally thought about the
Skyliners and had even attended one of their meetings, but when I saw how
close the Sunrisers were to me I went there.
John Sasso auditioned me, asked
me if I read music, and appointed me leader of the 3rd Baritone Section,
3 guys who weighed about twice what I did. When I went downstiars where they
were, they looked at me like they were going to eat me up, and asked me "what
did I want?" I told them I read music and John sent me down to play with
them. They started saying "we have a reader".
That year we won the New York State
Chamionship, the first Music in Motion, the American Legion Nationals, and a lot of
others as John Sasso introduced the new horns. It was one of the greatest
years of my life. I will never forget Mervin Herd .... Some really great guys
there.
If any Allumni from 1968 see this , drop me a line.
