Baritone 1987, 1988 & 1989

I began my drum corps career with a small neighborhood group in Brooklyn. My brother dragged me, kicking and screaming, to them in 1975. Years later, he scandalized the family name by jumping ship to the Sunrisers. I stayed a few years in B'klyn then moved on to the Blue Max in Ridgewood, Queens. My brother went to the Madison Scouts and in 1981 I marched -that is- performed with the Bayonne Bridgemen. I had some great experiences touring the country for four seasons and made some good friends. We had the audience on our sides, but the judges felt otherwise. I was so happy to get to play “Thunder & Blazes” and “In The Stone” my first year! I stayed with “The Bananas” four seasons then burned out -that is- retired in 1984. Hell, you think I was gonna march their “Christmas” show the next year? Fuhgedaboutit!

I joined up with Sun in 1987 (picked a good year, huh?) and went on to finish the season in the most rain drenched show I’ve ever performed in! Our “off the line” -that is- our Opener was “Adventures on Earth,” which had to be the loudest thing on God’s green Earth that day! I created a few T-shirt designs for the Souvie people to try to energize sales. I stayed with Sun through 1989 and retired on top of my game with two DCA trophies and a near miss. Not bad for a dinosaur. It wasn’t until Senior Corps that I found out what it’s like to win! I made some lasting friendships in Sun, and to this day I see friends at shows that I’d kill to protect. Drum Corps has brought me memories I’ll always remember, from great to boring (hey, what can I say...I hate parades). It was a roller coaster ride I wouldn’t trade for anything. There’s alot of people and fun times I miss. Do you know what I also miss? Singing the corps songs in parking lots: the songs about Skoy, Stan, Hey Ray, His name is Blob.... I was proud to wear orange, white, and blue for my three years, but I knew when to hang it up. I was huffing and puffing too much after run-throughs!
