Bill and I joined the Sunrisers in October of 1979, the day of the New York City Marathon.
The VZ bridge was closed for a while, hence renewing the myth that the Jersey Crew
was always late. It was a rebuilding year, and a good year to be a rookie.
Most of the Jersey Crew already had close ties from junior corps, but in Sunrisers,
we became a part of a bigger family. We both stayed with the corps through the DCA championship in 1982,
and have kept close with many of the friends we made.
Today, Bill and I have two wonderful sons, William 16, and Timothy 14, and are still best friends.
When I think back about my time in the Sunrisers, I remember long travel,
even longer hot practices in parking lots, and late nights with very little sleep,
but I would do it again in a heartbeat. It taught me to appreciate hard work towards a bigger goal,
and most of all, to laugh at myself. Thank you, Sun. I still wear my jacket.
