Joan : My years with the Sunrisers include :
- Color Guard : 1970 - 1978 and 1981
It all started one winter night in the 1970 season ... I joined the
Sunrisers !!! At this time in DCA having females in the corps was very
unique, strange, interesting and challenging. While in the corps (or
family) I met many people some nicer than others, but all great people. One
person I met during the 1974 season was John Griffin. John joined the corps
in 1972, but our paths never really crossed each other until one night at
a regular Sunriser party. We were married in 1975 and were voted the 'couple
most likely to stay together'. Well, 23 years later we're still together.
I marched in the color guard from 1970 to 1978 and came back for the end of
the 1979 season, and the mid 1981 to the end of the season to do the
'equipment exchanges'. As others probably have said, the Sunrisers are more
than just a hobby or sport, they are family. We still have many friends
from the old corps and the new corps just accepts us as long lost cousins
when we are at the shows. I worked in the phone company for 24 years and
now I am retired and still work in the company as a consultant, go figure ...
John : My years with the Sunrisers include :
My drum corps life goes back to 1956. I joined a fife, drum and
bugle corps at the age of 5. I marched in St. Mary's from Woodside, The
Bronx Kingsmen, and Sun. Drum Corps, needless to say, has brought me the
best years of my life. In particular, The Sunrisers brought me together with
my wife, Joan. So you see, The Sunrisers really have a special meaning to me
when I say we are a Sunriser Family.
